this is about my brother-in-law. he drops in diligently once a week, a reassuring presence in my home, where his mother is bedridden for the last eight years. he will be there when i return from my morning walk on either saturday or sunday, reading the newspaper just like that, face invisible. i recognise him from his rather unusually prominent knees. he is a retired physics professor, full of brains. (the brains run in the family.)
