The deep resonance of poetry

I am sharing this article I had written for my newspaper with my blogger friends since it is about a 'poetry slam' to be held in Thiruvananthapuram this evening. My reading of Basho had come in to help me add colour to this piece.

Hi,

Were you there at the Slam? I attended it, happened to read one of my poems and I would say I am glad that something like this was happening, perhaps for the first time, in Trivandrum.

Thanks, Sayrem.
Soni, no I did not attend. I saw the documentary 'Brave New Voices' that morning and was rattled seeing them trying to turn even poetry into a kind of hysteria. It was akin to what Asianet does with Idea Star Singer. How was the slam at Vyloppilli Samskriti Bhavavan?

Well, like I mentioned, the happiness derived from seeing something related to English Poetry happen in Tvm. Otherwise, people were either ignorant of what a Slam is(including me!) and most of the poetry sucked!

I read some of yours here and this is what it inspired today morn:

Neon
-----

Love's
just a chase
that ends with
screeching police sirens,
bewildered
flashing beacons,
and
your heart in handcuffs.

Thank you! Aren't we all a repository of our experiences which then finds a way of expressing itself, distilled and nuanced, in a few lines of verse?

Its good to meet a brother-in-arms! Are you based in Trivandrum? I work here, live here, an immigrant from a small town up north.

My email is sonimail@gmail.com Perhaps we could continue the conversation on email?
